Have you ever found yourself in a rut and you don’t know why? Or maybe you do know why, but can’t seem to get back on track and feeling good. How about those days when you start out feeling great and encounter someone or see something that totally shifts the feeling of your entire day. I know that I definitely have days when I just feel “off,” and I can’t put my finger on the exact reason why. Other days, I can point my finger at the source vehemently (even if it’s myself!). The world that we live in is completely comprised of energy vibrations, and some of that energy is good, while other energy, well, not so much. Every thought, every word, and every action that every single living creature experiences sends waves of energy out into the world, and, like dominoes, that energy has an affect on all who come into contact with it. For example, have you ever come into contact with a person that seems to always have problems in their life? One week they back their car into a light pole, the next week their washing machine breaks, a few days later they come down with a cold, their heater quits working, they get a bad haircut, they never have enough money, and the list goes on and on. Have you ever stopped to think about how much that person complains or negatively affirms his or her life? Since thoughts are the source of words, it’s pretty easy to ascertain that the thoughts of said person are pretty darn negative. When the majority of your thoughts, words, and actions are negative, the energy vibrations that you put off into the world are also negative. Furthermore, the more negative you are, the more negativity you attract. On the flip side, the same goes for being positive. It’s a pretty simple equation: like attracts like. I know that for me personally, being around negative people drains me of my own energy, and I have to be careful to protect myself from negative energy sources so that I don’t absorb that energy as my own.
In today’s post, I want to talk about some of the things that you can do to combat negative energy and protect yourself from absorbing negative energy. The less negative energy you absorb, the easier it is to focus on being positive and making sure that you are putting out good vibes into the world. It is impossible to be the light in the world if you are overcome with negative energy. Turn Off Electronics
One of the quickest ways to literally “turn off” the negative energy in a space you are in is to unplug all electronics. Electronics, such as TVs, cellphones, stereos, microwaves, lights, etc. all carry magnetic radiation, which creates stress in the limbic brain. This stress causes an adrenal response in our bodies similar to what happens when we encounter a physical threat to our survival. Continual over stimulation of the adrenal glands over time causes stress, fatigue, and a general feeling of being drained. When we are exhausted, we are very susceptible to absorbing negative energy around us. Joe Hall wrote an excellent article on the negative effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on the website Consumer Health. For those of you who like to know the “why” behind statements (i.e. my husband!), this article offers up the scientific reasons why EMFs are so bad for us. If you are just interested in removing negative energy from your life, know this: when you turn off and unplug your electronics, you will feel an IMMEDIATE sense of peace and positive energy. I am absolutely speaking from experience here. Turn off the cellphone, unplug the TV, and turn off all of the lights (Bonus: replace with candlelight), and let me know how magical it feels!
Play Classical Music or Soundscapes
Did you know that music has profound energy that can literally change the way we are feeling instantaneously? There have been numerous studies showing the link between classical music and cognitive functions, endurance, performance, and mood. On the other side of the coin, heavy metal music has been proven to lower chi (life) energy dramatically. In Judith Orloff’s book “Positive Energy: 10 Extraordinary Prescriptions for Transforming Fatigue, Stress, and Fear into Vibrance, Strength, and Love,” she talks about the research findings from monasteries showing the affect that classical music has on living creatures. From cows producing more milk to unborn babies settling down in their mom’s bellies, classical music has been proven to soothe the soul and increase positive energy. To remove negative energy from your space, turn on some soft, classical music or soundscapes. You will instantly experience a lift in your mood, and the longer you listen to it, the more positive your energy will become.
Stop Watching the News
Watching the news is one of the quickest ways for me to go from happy to depressed in about 10 seconds flat. This is no exaggeration! I avoid watching the news at all costs, because it has such a negative impact on my life and energy. While I understand the importance of keeping up with current events, I strongly advise against starting your day with watching the news. In fact, I advise against watching the news at all. Unfortunately, the news is full of violence, murder, and scandal, and the more horrific the story, the more spotlight it gets in the daily news. Watching these stories play out increases the production of cortisol, the stress hormone, and as we all know, the more stressed out we become, the more negative our energy. Furthermore, the news is a means of distribution, and I’m not just talking about information here. The news also distributes negative energy. Particularly for people who are emotional empaths (susceptible to absorbing others’ energies), the news can be devastating. Watching the news on TV is the absolute worst, because you are absorbing the negative energy of the news and the EMFs coming off of your television set. The simple solution is to break the habit of turning on the news while you have your morning coffee, and instead enjoy some quiet mediation time to start your day.
Use Essential Oils
Essential Oils are an excellent way to remove negative energy from your life, because they are grounding, uplifting, refreshing, and relaxing (depending on which ones you use). Essential oils are often used in holistic practices for their therapeutic and healing effects on the mind and body. When it comes to energy, essential oils can be used to clear out negative energy and raise vibrational frequency. Higher vibrational frequency equates to more energy, better mood, and increased performance. That is definitely a win, win, win to me!! There are three ways to use essential oils: topically, aromatically, and internally (SAFETY NOTE: Not all essential oils are safe for consumption. Make absolutely sure that you are only using therapeutic-grade oils if you choose to use internally!). One of my favorite ways to use essential oils to remove negative energy from a space is to diffuse them. I have a diffuser at home and at my desk at work. My favorite diffuser that I have ever used is the Greenair Spa Vapor diffuser, which is available on Amazon.com. It is very user-friendly, and you only have to fill it partially with water, add a few drops of your oil of choice, and enjoy! Basil- Protection from negative energy in crowds.
Cypress- Purifies surrounding energies and increases vibration.
Frankincense- Removes internal negative energy as well as negative energy in the environment.
Juniper- Cleanses negative energies that are harmful to good health as well as turn negative emotions into positive ones.
Lavender- Neutralizes negative energy in a room and relaxes the mind.
A word of advice when choosing your essential oils: Make sure to only use essential oils that are therapeutic-grade! A lot of oils that you can buy at the supermarket are mixed with carrier oils, meaning that most of their therapeutic qualities have been diluted down and they aren’t nearly as powerful. Oftentimes, dilution and additives can make an oil downright ineffective, and even worse, bad for your health! Rearrange Your Space
My final tip on removing negative energy from your life is to rearrange your space. When I was growing up, I have fond memories of my mom rearranging rooms or redecorating whenever the “mood” struck. The mood typically meant that something upsetting had happened, and the result was always a change in the energy in our home. Rearranging a space is a simple way to clear out negative energy and infuse a space with positive vibes. When you move furniture around, you break up stagnant negative energy, and make space for the bad vibes to clear out. If you are rearranging a room that you are in often, add a pop of color to bring in new energy, and bring in some fresh flowers or plants. Adding a plant or vase of flowers to a space can infuse it with positive energy instantaneously. The added bonus of rearranging your space is that all that moving around gets you endorphins kicking, and the sense of accomplishment you feel when you step back and check out your handiwork instantly creates positive energy.

It is so easy to get bogged down in this crazy world that we live in, but if we take the time to step back and make a few small changes, the impact on the way we feel and make others’ feel is profound.
